Editors South Australia (Editors SA) is the lead organisation for editors and editing in South Australia

Editors South Australia is a professional association that supports practising editors and promotes the highest standards of editing. Editors SA provides regular opportunities for its members to meet one another, develop their editing (and related) skills and keep up to date with new technologies. Professional accreditation is strongly advocated through IPEd (Institute of Professional Editors) as a way of setting an objective benchmark of standards. IPEd’s Editors Directory links editors to potential employers or clients.

Editing for Electronic Media: Making writing accessible for all potential users (Wednesday 4 July 2018)

Bookings now open

Presenter
Cliff Edwards is a Program Manager in the Department of the Premier and Cabinet and responsible for initiatives to improve the way government delivers its online services. He has spent 13 years with the South Australian Government, developing customer-centred approaches to online services. He has an extensive human services background in the fields of mental health, corrections and disability.
Cliff has worked in researching online user experience and in applying the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Projects have involved working with non-government organisations such as Vision Australia, Squiz Australia, KPMG and the Royal Society for the Blind to achieve many firsts for the South Australian Government. Cliff was recently recognised in the inaugural 2017 Department of the Premier and Cabinet RED Awards for Excellence in Value Creation in Commitment to the Web Accessibility Standards Team.

Event description
Almost all editors work or will work on material to be displayed electronically. How can you make sure that the content is presented well, so that users can access it, regardless of any impairments they may have? Editors can add value to their work by choosing appropriate text and formatting styles and by alerting authors to potential accessibility issues with material. This is an important legal and ethical area for professional editors. This meeting will help you ‘get up to speed’ on the topic.

You can learn about:
common barriers to accessing electronic material
strategies and resources to deal with those barriers
a quick test to check any website for accessibility
the World Wide Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
how the Australian Government Digital Service Standard has been designed with accessibility as
a core focus—aiming to help make government services easier, simpler and faster for all users
  • … and lots more.
