Visiting Melbourne for the IPEd Conference? The library's also worth a visit.

Will you have a spare hour or two (or perhaps a whole day) while you're in Melbourne for the 2019 IPEd Conference? Squeeze in a trip to the State Library of Victoria to join a free tour or do some solo exploring.

The library opened on its current site in 1856 and features magnificent historic spaces including:
  • the La Trobe Reading Room - the octagonal domed gallery is six storeys high and houses 32,000 books as well as several permanent exhibitions
  • the Redmond Barry Reading Room - the library's largest reading room houses general nonfiction and the journals and magazines collections
  • the Cowen Gallery - houses a permanent exhibition of artworks from the Library's Pictures Collection
  • the South Rotunda - hosts small exhibitions and provides access to the Heritage Collections Reading Room
