Why join Editors SA?
Editors SA works actively to support and promote editors and the
editing profession, both in South Australia and nationally, through the
Institute of Professional Editors Limited (IPEd). As a member, you will have access to a variety of benefits.
For all members (full and associate)
- Meetings—Editors SA meetings are held six times a year and feature a speaker or panel discussion on a topic relevant to editing.
Meetings
provide professional development, networking opportunities and social
interaction. Meetings are sometimes preceded by a quick,
casual dinner at a nearby restaurant at diners’ own expense. Visitors
and guests are also welcome.
- Workshops—Editors SA organises several workshops
each year for professional development. Presenters are sometimes invited
from interstate. Workshops are a day or a half-day in length. Some
workshops are for members only; others allow non-members to attend, in
which case members are offered reduced rates.
- Email notifications—All members receive emails covering notification of meetings, workshops, positions
vacant and other information. Sometimes Editors SA is asked to
advertise editing work exclusively through the email system.
- Newsletter—Editors SA's newsletter (... the word,
delivered quarterly via email) contains society news, meeting
reports, national news from IPEd, and other items. The newsletter is not
freely available on the website until several months after
the issue date.
- IPEd website—IPEd, the national organisation for
Australian editors, also has an open website, but certain resources of
value to editors, and discussion forums, are available only to members
of Australian branches. The website is gradually enlarging
its coverage of material useful for editors and those interested in
editing.
- Conference—IPEd holds a two-day national conference
every two years in an Australian capital city. Society members are
entitled to discounted registration. These conferences are a significant
professional development opportunity and receive high praise from
participants.
- Accreditation exam—The IPEd accreditation exam is a
rigorous test of editing ability and knowledge. Passing the exam
confers accreditation as a professional editor for five years, and the
right to use the postnominal AE. Extension of accreditation by
documenting one’s editing activities is available thereafter. Members
can sit the exam at a discounted rate.
- Insurance—Full members can access discounted
professional indemnity insurance for editors. More information is available on the IPEd website.
For full members
- Voting rights—Full members are entitled to vote at society meetings.
- Officer of the branch committee—Offices that are available
to full members include president, treasurer and membership secretary.
Officers are automatically members of the committee. (Membership of the
committee is also open to associate members, but in non-officer roles
only.)
